Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s)
Eligibility
Who is this Lab for? I’m not an Impact Producer…can I still apply?
Yes. This Lab is for Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander people using storytelling or creative practice to drive change, whether or not you identify or are recognised as an Impact Producer. You might be a filmmaker, artist, organiser, educator, or working at the intersection of these spaces.
We especially recognise the impact work that First Nations people do in their communities (caring, defending Country, vitalising culture, advocating for truth-telling and justice, etc.), often without formal recognition. This Lab aims to support and grow that leadership.
Do I need a finished film to apply?
No. You can apply with an early idea, a work that's in progress, or a completed film you’re ready to share more widely or to specific audiences. Our biggest measure in assessing your work is your intention to use the project for meaningful impact.
Do I need experience in the screen industry? Do I need to be a filmmaker to apply?
The Lab is open to individuals working on a film, audio, digital, or multimedia projects, you do not need to have experience in the screen industry to apply.
What does “impact” mean?
Impact can take many forms, from shifting narratives and attitudes, to influencing policy, building movements for justice, defending Country, strengthening community or revitalising culture. It can have different points of focus — on an individual, a community, or a broader issue. This Lab will help you define what impact means for the story you’re telling &/or the community you’re working with.
What kind of projects are you looking for?
We’re open to a broad range of creative projects, as long as you’re working with film, audio, digital or multimedia documentary.
Does my project need to be about a social issue?
We prioritise projects centering First Nations stories that advance social, cultural &/or climate justice. We know that for First Nations people, big systemic change and local community actions are deeply connected. Your project should show intention to support this interconnected impact.
Can I bring a collaborator from my project or team?
We’re only accepting applications from individuals rather than film teams. While multiple members of the same project team (for example, a Director and a Producer) may submit separate applications, selection will typically be limited to one representative per project. This approach ensures that the Lab, which has a limited capacity, can accommodate a broad and diverse range of stories and voices.
Will I have to deliver something at the end of the Lab?
You’ll be required to present your project to the cohort, your mentors and some special guests. But there is no final product — the Lab is a space for connection, exploration, reflection and creative growth. While you might leave with the foundations of an impact strategy, new tools or partnerships, or a new approach to your work, there’s no expectation of a finished product.
Your Application
Can I get help with my application?
We’re a small team and can’t offer one-on-one writing support, but we’ve designed the process to be as flexible as possible — this includes the option to apply in multiple formats if written communication feels prohibitive, and a selection process that prioritises the strength of your project’s intention and potential for impact. If access or technology is a barrier, get in touch, we’ll do our best to support you.
When is my application due?
The application portal will close Friday 5 September at 11:59 pm Australian Eastern Standard Time. We encourage you to submit your application by the deadline to avoid being locked out. Life is often busy and hard — if you think you might need a little extra time, please reach out to us as early as possible so that we can find a way to support you.
Logistics
What if I’m working full-time &/or caregiving? Can I still participate?
It’s a requirement that you’re at the Lab in person from Tuesday 4 to Saturday 8 November, with travel likely required on Monday 3 November. You may need to take paid or unpaid leave for this period, and we are not able to cover lost income.
If you’re a carer, we’ll do our best to support your participation. This could include assistance with child care or other arrangements, both formal and informal (we understand family/community often holds this!). We’ll work with you to make sure you can be present and supported during your time away from work and caring responsibilities.
Where is the Lab held? Will accommodation be provided?
The Lab takes place on Wodi Wodi Country (Kangaroo Valley, NSW). All accommodation and food will be provided during the Lab courtesy of our hosts, Shark Island Kangaroo Valley.
Will travel costs be covered?
All travel costs (including but not limited to flights, transfers, layovers, fuel, ride shares & cabs, airport parking, etc.) are covered and arranged by GARUWA.
Will I be paid to attend the Lab?
No, this is not a paid opportunity. The Lab is a fully funded experience: all travel, accommodation and meals are covered, but we are not able to offer a fee for your time.
Will I be sharing a room?
Yes. To make the most of limited venue capacity, you will share your room with up to three participants who share your gender identity. Each participant will have their own personal pod and private changing area to ensure privacy.
Is the venue accessible?
The Lab takes place on a rural property with some steps and grassy areas at the entrance. Due to the nature of the site, it is not fully accessible and may not be suitable for people with certain mobility or accessibility needs.
