Crystal Love
1 Hour TV Documentary
Crystal Love is a wickedly comedic cultural powerhouse, thriving in the face of everything life has thrown at her.
A Sistergirl (trans woman) from the Tiwi Islands in northern Australia, Crystal Love has had to fight prejudice her whole life — both from her community and Australian society. A fierce advocate and born entertainer who now fights for the survival of Tiwi queer youth.
Growing up on remote Aboriginal communities of the Tiwi Islands, she had to fight to survive. Her community was colonised by Christianity, so traditional gender norms were forgotten, and she became a threat that had to be resisted.
She created the Sistergirls, a safe space for young Tiwi queer people to live as themselves. In doing so, she faced years of backlash and sometimes violence. An entertainer, community leader, drag QUEEN and battler, living through enormous loss and tragedy — her story is one of resilience, tenacity and strength in culture, life and on stage.
